STRENGTH AND OBESITY CONTROL WORKOUT INSTRUCTIONS


The objective is to work slowly, build up strength and lean up fatty muscles. It will also help with building cardiovascular, mental stability, agility, balance, coordination, stamina, endurance and sustains healthy muscle tone as your dog ages. With an overwhelming 59% of dogs obese just in USA alone this will help a wide range of dog owner, breeders and trainers keep their dogs fitness and healthy!!

Before starting, a few quick reminders:

  • Vet check first if your dog has any health or joint issues.

  • Weight guideline: Vest weight should be no more than 5–10% of your dog’s body weight to start off and increase your dog gets stronger (some dogs start even lower).

  • Balanced loading: Weight must be evenly distributed left–right.

  • Avoid heat: Weighted walks increase exertion, so do this in cooler weather.


PARK & OPEN FIELD WORKOUT:

1. Walk or a slow run for 50 - 100 yards down and back 1 or 2 times to get use to the feel of what is going on.

2. Put the vest on with no weights and do the same walk or run to let your dog get use to the vest. 

3. Start adding weights 1 or 2 bags according to your dogs strength. Go down and back 50 -100 yards, add 1 weight and repeat until all weights are in the vest or until the vest is at a comfortable weight, DO NOT OVER DO IT.

4. Take weights out of vest, get the weighted sled out and hook it to the vest. With no weights on the sled go down and back 1 or 2 times to get your dog use to pulling the sled. Make sure the sled is at least 2 feet from your dogs tail end so your dog will not feel uncomfortable. (WEIGHTED DOG SLED COMING SOON)

5. Add weights to sled slowly according to your dogs strength do not over do it. The sled can hold up to 70lbs. 

6. Adding weights to vest and sled at the same time. Please make sure you master step 3 - 5 first before moving to step 6. Then apply the weights in the vest with weights on the sled steps 3 and 5. We use up to 30lbs on our sled for our dogs for most of our workouts, but the sled can hold up to 70lbs. Most dogs can pull more than 30lbs this is just a good starting weight 15lbs. - 30lbs. 

NOTE: Please work your dog out nice and slow to prevent any and all injuries. Make sure your dog gets plenty fresh water and a good healthy protein diet. ALL PRODUCTS ARE FOR WORKOUT PURPOSE ONLY!!!

DOG TREADMILL WORKOUT:

🐾 General Guidelines for All Breeds

  • Vest Rule: Start with 3–5% of body weight, never exceed 10%.

  • Session Length: 20–40 minutes depending on fitness level.

  • Warm-Up & Cool-Down: Always 3–5 minutes without vest.

  • Monitoring: Watch for gait changes, excessive panting, drooling, paw dragging, or hopping.

  • Frequency: Start with 2×/week and build up.

🔥 1. FAT LOSS PROGRAM — Calorie Burn + Low Joint Impact

Goal: Sustainable weight reduction through steady-state cardio & mild incline.

Structure (30–35 min)

  1. Warm-Up (5 min):

    • 1.0–1.5 mph, no vest.

  2. Vest On: Incline Walk (15 min):

    • Speed: 1.8–2.5 mph

    • Incline: start at 3%, progress to 5–7%

    • Purpose: increased caloric burn without high speed.

  3. Fat-Burn Intervals (8 min):

    • 1 min at 2.5–3.0 mph

    • 1 min at 1.8–2.0 mph

  4. Cool-Down (3–5 min):

    • Slow walk, no incline, remove vest.

Frequency:

3–4×/week for meaningful fat loss.

Breed Notes:

  • For giant breeds → keep incline lower (0–4%).

  • For small/toy breeds → lower speeds (0.8–1.8 mph).

💪 2. MUSCLE BUILDING PROGRAM — Strength & Power

Goal: Build hind-end, shoulder, and core strength.

Structure (25–35 min)

  1. Warm-Up (5 min): No vest.

  2. Vest On: Power Inclines (10–12 min):

    • Speed: 1.5–2.2 mph

    • Incline progression: 4% → 8% → 12%

    • Hold each incline for 3–4 minutes.

  3. Strength Intervals (8 min):

    • 45 seconds slow, strong walk (2.5–3.2 mph)

    • 75 seconds recovery (1.8 mph)

  4. Endurance Strength (5 min):

    • Incline 5%, slow controlled walk with vest.

  5. Cool-Down (3–5 min): No vest.

Frequency:

2–3×/week, allowing rest between strength days.

Breed Notes:

  • Brachycephalics (Bulldogs, Pugs) → avoid >6% incline.

  • Working breeds excel with 10–12% incline.

🏃3. STAMINA / ENDURANCE PROGRAM — Aerobic Conditioning

Goal: Improve cardiovascular fitness, athletic performance, and sustained energy.

Structure (30–40 min)

  1. Warm-Up (5 min):

    • 1.5 mph walking, no vest.

  2. Vest On: Steady Jog (10–15 min):

    • Speed: 2.8–4.0 mph (breed-dependent)

    • Incline: 1–3%

  3. Endurance Intervals (10–15 min):

    • 2 minutes jog (3.0–4.5 mph)

    • 1 minute walk (2.0 mph)

  4. Cool-Down (5 min):

    • Slow walk, no vest.

Frequency:

3–5×/week depending on conditioning level.

Breed Notes:

  • Sighthounds & working breeds → higher speeds (3.8–4.5 mph).

  • Small/toy breeds → shorter strides, max 2.8–3.5 mph.

🧘 4. BEHAVIOR REGULATION PROGRAM — Calm Mind & Structured Energy Release

Goal: Provide predictable physical stimulation that reduces anxiety, reactivity, and high arousal.

Structure (20–30 min)

  1. Warm-Up (3 min): Slow walk, encouraging focus.

  2. Vest On: Rhythmic Silent Walk (10–15 min):

    • Speed: 1.2–2.0 mph

    • No commands; let dog find a consistent mental pace.

  3. Focus Intervals (5–7 min):

    • 1 minute at 2.2–2.5 mph

    • 1 minute at 1.5 mph

    • Use calm tone or markers only.

  4. Cool-Down (3–5 min):

    • Slow walk + calm praise.

Frequency:

Daily or near-daily (5–7×/week) since intensity is low.

Breed Notes:

  • Herding breeds respond very well to structured rhythmic patterns.

  • High-drive working breeds benefit from vest + mental tasking.

  • Sensitive breeds (Sight hounds, toy breeds) → keep vest at 3% max.
